Becky Albertalli, author of Simon and the Homo Sapiens Agenda, upon which the film is based, recently spoke to EW about her hopes that the film would reach kids in towns like Bomer’s. The film also stars Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, and Katherine Langford. Love, Simon is a coming-of-age story about a gay high school student, Simon (Nick Robinson), who falls in love with an anonymous classmate over email but struggles to come out to his loved ones. I know you’ll love it so come watch for free this Sunday!” The post further explains where and how to pick up tickets for the showing. “This is an important movie, and a really good one. “Please come see in my hometown of Spring, TX for free! and I bought out the whole screening for you,” reads Bomer’s post. Matt and Simon continue being a class act. The IndieWire report notes that no release date has been set, and YouTube doesn’t have a theatrical partner tied to the film yet. Vulture Club will also star Edie Falco, Matt Bomer, and Julian Morris. In 2016, Amazon’s Manchester by the Sea saw a successful theatrical release, which paved the way for its Best Picture Oscar nomination. Giving Vulture Club a theatrical release seems like an attempt by YouTube to increase its credibility and compete with streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, both of which have released films in theaters. But YouTube was forced to can the project later that year when Spurlock admitted to sexually abusive behavior, and stepped down from his production company. YouTube Red had also planned to release Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! in theaters after buying it at TIFF in 2017. Although this is largely a departure from YouTube’s past strategy of premiering its originals solely on YouTube Red, the company did give a limited theatrical release to This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous last year, as IndieWire points out. The movie, Vulture Club, stars Susan Sarandon as a nurse whose journalist son is held hostage by terrorists. YouTube Red plans to try a new distribution strategy for an upcoming original movie, which will see a theatrical release, according to a new report from IndieWire. They're clearly prepping for this episode to be put forth to be nominated for an award and that is smart since the episode also turned out to be the best of the series so far. It wasn't because it was just a big deal for him - they wanted you to know about it. He kept his face out there in relation to the show. He was included in the press for the show as if he was on it from interviews in print and in front of the camera. You don't hear about it as much as you heard about Matt's episode of American Crime Story. (Hell, Kathy even won a DGA award for her work.)īigger name directors like John Singleton pop in on shows too, he directed an episode of American Crime Story: OJ. Kathy Bates, John Slattery and Amy Poehler can go on that list as well. Chandra Wilson directed an episode of Grey's Anatomy. Jodie Foster did Black Mirror just this past year. Tony Goldwyn directed multiple episodes of Scandal. However, actors direct episodes of shows all the time.Īngela Bassett directed two episodes of American Horror Story. They spun the shit out of that singular episode directing gig, it was almost masterful. It's kind of silly to think he wouldn't make a phone call or suggestion for his husband. It's not like he can't turn to his right and ask his opinion. So ultimately Duckling’s obsequiousness matched with his superiors’ lack of imagination sort of put him on the path where he is now. Outside of Ryan Murphy, another example would be the Magic Mike movies especially the sequel where he had leverage to get a better part written but still managed to go through it without saying or doing anything interesting. A more inspired director might have cast him as the Paul Popham character which Murphy gave to a badly cast Taylor Kitsch. The Normal Heart being the perfect example of this in which Bomer basically plays a MacGuffin, a plot device, a handsome man with no personality who gets AIDS solely so the protagonist has a goal. Bomer has always been sort of a lowest common denominator castee for Ryan and the roles he chooses for him are more or less obvious. Murphy’s talent is taking somewhat untraditional actors like an over-the-hill Jessica Lange or a forgotten Kathy Bates or quirky Sarah Paulsen and recreating them again and again in novel ways. I suppose in a way Murphy is the architect of Duckling’s career in that he hasn’t really found a way to use him uniquely and that is sort of mirrored in the roles Bomer is cast in throughout his career.
